In June of 2017 the Salvation Army announced plans to move their Lower Town / ByWarm Market homeless shelter to the Vanier area. A new modern shelter is planned for the land at 333 Montreal Road at the corner of Granville Street. The new shelter will be able to house a larger amount of people with their planned 350 beds.
Many residents and business owners have protested the new shelter and have formed SOS Vanier which have a Twitter account.

More than 140 people from the community came last week to speak about their concerns and disapproval of the Salvation Army's move to the City's Vanier area. Despite the large turn out the planning committee approved the plan on Friday night in a 6-3 vote.
