Vanier Business Owners Appeal Salvation Army's Plan for 333 Montreal Road

Many business owners are opposing the Salvation Army's plan to build a $50 million dollar shelter at 333 Montreal Road which will house 350 beds with 140 of those being for emergency stays.

Concerns from business owners are centered around the move to the Montreal Road location hindering business and development opportunities along Montreal Road and neighbouring streets. The other concern is that Vanier is already home to numerous shelters and adding another shelter of this size would simply put a lot of street of the community. The City had put a cap of 4 shelters for the Rideau-Vanier ward but a fifth was allowed. Mathieu Fleury says there are in fact 12 shelters in his ward none of which were mentioned in the draft report presented to the City.

The appeal process to the Ontario Municipal Board could be a lengthy process. The community and business owners are left to wonder what the future holds for their community.
