Safe Neighbourhoods

We all want our families and loved ones to be safe. Ottawa is a safe city and crimes against the person are rare. Please remember that densely populated neighbourhoods tend to have more crime than those with fewer people. The City of Ottawa Police Service has an online crime mapping tool available for the public.

The Property and Lot

Although the location of the property is important when it comes to picking the right neighbourhood sometimes the location of the property on the lot or in the neighbourhood is equally important. Is the property located on a corner lot where there could be more traffic and cars passing by? Does the property have a backyard for your kids to play or will they be playing in the front yard? Do the neighbours have windows giving you little to no privacy? Finally, you want to make sure the property is safe for kids, especially young ones that are more at risk of falling. Properly secured railings, the number of stairs to the front door are more things you could be looking at.

Floorplan

Other than the size of rooms and bedroom or bathroom count one may want to consider interior space where kids can run or play in. Traditionally this has been the basement where a family room may be located. Think about repurposing a bedroom or a den as a kid play area if basement space is not possible.
